Before you call

3D printing: the short version

Building parts layer by layer in metal or plastic, then machining the faces that matter.

When you need it

  • A prototype to check fit before you machine it
  • Jigs and fixtures for your own shop floor
  • Shapes with inside channels a cutter cannot reach
  • A short run where a mould costs too much

What to send the shop

  • An STL or STEP file, plus a drawing
  • Material and what the part does
  • Quantity and the date you need it
  • Faces, holes and sizes that must be exact

Typical lead time

10 to 15 business days at one Montreal shop, from a print ready file.

Ask the shop

3 questions worth asking

  1. Q1

Should this part be printed, machined or both?

  2. Q2

Does the quote include supports, finishing and any machining?

  3. Q3

Do you print this material here or send it out?

Questions

3D printing FAQ

Should I print or machine my part?

Printing can make shapes a cutter cannot reach. Machining often suits simple shapes, tight tolerances on many features or larger runs. Ask the shop to compare both.

Can printed parts be machined after?

Yes. Many shops print close to size, then mill or turn the faces, holes and threads that must be exact. Mark those on your drawing.

Which file should I send?

An STL or STEP file for the part, and a drawing for sizes and tolerances. Ask which format the shop’s printers take.

What is binder jetting?

A metal printing method that glues layers of powder with a liquid binder. Most parts then go into a furnace to fuse.

Good to know

  • Précision IMS in Montreal combines metal laser fusion printing with machining.
  • Ask whether printing and machining happen in the same shop.
  • For metal parts, ask which powders the shop prints in house.
  • No Montreal shop we checked posts prices for this. Send a request to compare quotes.
