What pushes the price up

• Old finish: paint, rust and old powder must come off first
• Size and shape: awkward pieces take longer to blast and coat
• Special colours: one wheel shop adds $40 a set
• Start-up fees: one Ottawa shop adds $95 to every job
• Many small parts: each one is hung and coated by hand

Is blasting included?

Ask every time. It varies by shop.

• Ottawa Powder Coating says stripping and sandblasting are part of its standard process

• Option Wheels' $650 rim price includes strip and blast

How long it takes

• The work: about 1 to 2 days for a set of rims
• The wait: 5 to 7 business days for home jobs at one Ottawa shop
• Summer: up to 3 weeks longer at that shop
• Part of a bigger job: outside finishing adds 7 to 10 business days at one Quebec fab shop

How to get a fair quote

1. Send clear photos of every piece, with rough sizes
2. Say what's on it now: paint, rust or old powder
3. Give a RAL colour code, or bring a sample
4. Ask if blasting, masking and start-up fees are in the price
5. Ask for a ready date, not just how long it takes

How thick, how tough

• Powder maker TIGER Drylac recommends at least 2.5 to 3.0 mils
• Typical powder coat runs 1 to 4 mils, or 25 to 100 µm
• One PPG epoxy powder passed 2,500 hours of salt spray. That's a lab test, not years outside.
