Before you call

Anodizing and plating: the short version

Anodizing toughens and colours aluminum. Plating adds a thin metal layer: zinc, chrome or nickel.

When you need it

  • Aluminum parts that need colour or wear resistance
  • Steel hardware that needs rust protection
  • Chrome or nickel for looks on car and bike parts
  • Stainless parts that need passivation

What to send the shop

  • A drawing with the finish spec and colour
  • The alloy, like 6061 aluminum or 304 stainless
  • How many parts per batch
  • Areas to mask, like threads and bores
  • Any size limits after coating

Typical lead time

About 5 working days at one Quebec plater, with 48 hour rush.

Questions

Anodizing and plating FAQ

Type II or Type III anodizing?

Type II is thinner: 0.00007 to 0.001 inch at one Ontario finisher. Type III, hard coat, runs 0.0005 to 0.0045 inch there.

Why is there a minimum charge?

Finishers run parts in batches, so most charge a minimum per lot or order. Group parts into one batch to spread it.

How fast is plating?

Fast once you're in. One Ontario zinc plater turns orders in under 48 hours. A Quebec plater quotes 5 working days.

How long does chrome plating take?

Decorative chrome can take 2 to 6 weeks or more at one Ontario shop. Industrial chrome on worn shafts runs 3 to 5 business days at a Canadian plater.

Can you anodize steel?

No. Anodizing is for aluminum and titanium. Steel gets zinc plating, galvanizing, paint or powder coat.

Good to know

  • No Ottawa finisher we found posts prices. The minimums above are from a US shop, to show how pricing works.
  • Coatings add thickness. Tell the finisher which sizes must stay exact.
  • Hard anodizing and plating can need special racks. Ask before you design tiny parts.
