Shop certifications, explained for buyers

What each one means, when your job needs it and how to check it yourself.

CWB: welding companies

The CWB Group certifies companies, not just welders. W47.1 covers steel. W47.2 covers aluminum.

  • Division 1: a registered engineer on staff full time
  • Division 2: an engineer retained part time
  • Division 3: no engineer required

For welded structures built to CSA S16, CWB says the fabricator must be Division 1 or 2. A Division 3 shop can work under them as a subcontractor.

Check it: search the CWB certified companies directory. It shows the standard, division and location.

ISO 9001: quality systems

  • It certifies how a shop runs quality, not a single part
  • Independent certification bodies do the audits
  • Check it: search the certificate number on IAF CertSearch
  • Look at the status, the scope and the expiry date
  • No result doesn't prove a fake. Ask the shop for its certificate.

AS9100 and ISO 13485

  • AS9100: quality for aerospace work. Check it in the IAQG's OASIS database.
  • ISO 13485: a quality system built for medical devices, from design to servicing

Controlled Goods and defence work

  • To examine, hold or transfer controlled goods in Canada, a company must register, unless exempt
  • Check it: the PSPC registrant list is updated daily
  • Some registrants ask not to be listed. Ask the shop directly.
  • CPCSC Level 1 will be required in select defence contracts from summer 2026
  • ITAR is the US rule set for defence exports. Ask if your part involves US controlled technology.

How to check any certificate

  1. Ask for the certificate itself, not just a logo on the website
  2. Check the scope covers your kind of part or work
  3. Check the expiry date
  4. Look it up: CWB, IAF CertSearch, OASIS or PSPC

On our shop profiles, certifications are what each shop states. Check the ones your job depends on.
