Questions

Tool and die FAQ

How much does an injection mould cost?

Fictiv puts prototype moulds at about US$3,000 to US$15,000, and hardened steel production moulds at US$25,000 to US$100,000 and up.

How long does a mould last?

An aluminum mould lasts 5,000 to 10,000 cycles, says Protolabs Network. Tool steel can pass 100,000.

How fast can I get a mould?

Plan on 4 to 6 weeks. Fictiv quotes prototype steel moulds in as little as 10 to 14 days.

What is wire EDM good for?

Hard metals and fine detail. One Toronto area shop holds 0.0005 down to 0.0002 inch, and another cuts up to 12.5 inches thick.

Where are Ontario's tool and die shops?

Windsor-Essex alone has 250-plus machine, tool, die and mould makers. This page lists the ones near Ottawa.

Good to know

  • Tooling is a big one-time cost. Ask what the part costs per piece after it.
  • Give your yearly volume. It decides aluminum or hardened steel.
  • Mould prices here are online service guides in US dollars. Local quotes differ.
