Questions
Railings and stairs FAQ
Does my Winnipeg deck need a building permit?
The City lists decks over 3.4 m2 in a back or side yard and more than 600 mm above ground as needing a building permit. Check your plan with the City.
When does a deck need a guard?
The City's Manitoba Building Code guide requires guards on decks more than 600 mm above finished ground level.
How high must a required deck guard be?
At least 900 mm where the deck is not more than 1800 mm above finished ground, and 1070 mm above that. Openings must stop a 100 mm sphere from passing.
Do the same permit rules apply outside Winnipeg?
Check with your municipality. Selkirk, Steinbach and the rural municipalities set their own permit rules.
