Before you call

Heat treating: the short version

Heating and cooling metal on a set cycle to make it harder or easier to machine.

When you need it

  • Tools, gears and shafts that need hardness
  • Parts that must be stress relieved after welding
  • Steel to soften before machining
  • Case hardened wear surfaces

What to send the shop

  • Material grade, from the mill cert if you have it
  • The hardness or spec you need
  • Part sizes, weight and quantity
  • Areas that must stay soft

Typical lead time

A Hillside machining firm lists 2 to 3 days for heat treating.

Ask the shop

3 questions worth asking

  1. Q1

Do you test hardness and send a report?

  2. Q2

Is there a minimum lot charge?

  3. Q3

Will the parts move or scale, and who cleans them?

Questions

Heat treating FAQ

How long does heat treating take in Chicago?

A Hillside machining firm lists 2 to 3 days. Long cycles and big loads take longer.

What do I tell the shop?

The material grade, the hardness you need, part sizes and quantity. Say which areas must stay soft.

Good to know

  • Send the mill cert if you have it. The grade sets the cycle.
  • Leave stock for grinding if parts must hold tight sizes after treating.
