Do I need a permit to replace porch railings in Chicago?
Not for railing pickets, deck boards or stair treads, if you have no building code violation. Columns, beams, stringers or joists always need a permit.
Who draws plans for a structural porch permit?
An Illinois licensed architect or structural engineer. The plans go in with the permit application.
How strong must a Chicago porch be?
Every part of a porch or deck must carry 100 pounds per square foot. Inspectors check the hand and guard rails too.
Does a small porch need a permit?
Not to repair or replace a house porch less than 6 feet off the ground with no more than 50 square feet of landing.
Good to know
- Measure the full run in feet, corners and landings included.
- Steel railings outside need a coat. Ask about galvanizing or powder coating.
