These are prices shops post on their own sites, read in October 2026. Some don't say if installing is included, so ask.

US cost guides

HomeGuide's stair railing guide (2023), installed, per linear foot:

For a whole stair railing of about 25 feet, HomeGuide puts the installed cost at US$500 to US$6,300.

Replacing a stair railing

• Removal: taking out the old railing adds work before the new one goes in
• Old mounts: the new railing may need to fit where the old one was fixed
• Stairs: angled joints, and glass cut to the slope, add fabrication time
• Mounting: what's under the railing, and the anchors it needs, change the install

Ask for the railing, the removal and the install as separate lines on the quote.

Gate prices

In the US:

• Automating an existing gate: US$400 to US$5,500 (HomeGuide, 2023)
• Automatic driveway gate, installed: US$1,600 to US$13,000 (HomeGuide, 2023)
• Gate opener alone: US$300 to US$5,000+ (HomeGuide, 2023)
• Wrought iron gate: US$600 to US$4,000 manual, US$1,150 to US$8,600 automatic (Fixr, 2025)

An opener needs power, controls and safety devices too, so the gate price alone isn't the full cost.

Code rules that shape the job

Ontario, 2024 Building Code:

• Guards at least 1,070 mm high in most places
• 900 mm allowed inside a home
• Openings small enough to stop a 100 mm (4 inch) ball

US, under the IRC (as Boulder County lists it):

• Guards at least 36 inches high
• Stair handrails 34 to 38 inches above the stair nosings
• Openings small enough to stop a 4 inch ball

Permits: Toronto needs one for a deck more than 60 cm above the ground. Rules change by province and city, so check yours and ask which code the installer builds to.

What moves the price

• Material: aluminum is usually the cheapest per foot in the tables above
• Length: most railings are priced by the foot
• Stairs: angled joints and sloped glass take longer
• Custom design: decorative work and special finishes cost more
• Finish: steel needs a coating. See what powder coating costs.
• Removal: taking out the old railing
• Mounting: concrete, deck or wall, and the anchors it needs
• Gate size and automation: wide gates need bigger frames and posts, and openers add power, controls and install
• Permits and site: fees, hard to reach spots and poor ground

How long it takes

• Welded steel railings: 4 to 8 weeks after measuring at The Stair Shoppe, Calgary
• Installing: 2 to 4 days at Western Iron Works, after the railing is made
• Custom driveway gate: 6 to 8 weeks at Taimco, Mississauga
• Electric driveway gate: 4 to 8 weeks at Victoria Fabricators, with automation
