Questions
Bending and rolling FAQ
What is the difference between bending and rolling?
Bending makes sharp angles, on a press brake or a tube bender. Rolling makes smooth curves, like a cylinder or a curved beam. Many shops do both.
What should a tube bending drawing show?
The tube size, wall thickness and material, the centre line radius, each bend angle and the quantity. Ask the shop to check it against its tooling before you buy material.
Can a shop roll plate into a cone?
Many plate rolling shops make cylinders, cones and curved panels. Send the finished size and the plate thickness, and ask whether it fits their rolls.
Will bending mark my parts?
It can leave tool marks. Tell the shop which faces show, and ask how they protect painted, stainless or aluminum parts.
Good to know
Tri-Fab Metals in Edmonton lists a 250 ton press brake with a 12 foot length.
Ask for setup, material and bending as separate lines on the quote.
For an odd shape, send a sample part or a photo with sizes.
